How To: Take Database Backup for POS

This article explains how to take a full backup of your POS database from the Administration module available in POS. There are two ways to take backup from POS:

  1. Directly running the backup utility (DBBackup.exe).

  2. From the Ginesys POS Administration module

This article is relevant where you would like to take the backup although you cannot open the software for some reason. It would also guide you to take a regular backup from the Administration module.

Note: The backup should ideally be taken in an external storage so that even if the system crashes, the data is safe.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Directly running the backup utility (DBBackup.exe)

    1. Locate the DBBackup.exe file from POS; it will usually be found in <Ginesys POS installed drive>\Program Files (x86)\GSL\GINESYS POS\DBBackup.exe

    2. Right click on on DBBackup.exe and click on Run as Administrator.

    3. This opens the Backup window.

    4. Click on the Stop Scheduler Service button.

    5. Click on Start Backup Now button.

Note: If the purpose of the backup is to migrate the installation to new server or re-installation of POS server, then DON'T Start Schedule Service

    6. Once the backup process is complete and successful, start the scheduler service by clicking on the Start Schedule Service button.

    7. Click on Close to close the window.

Important - Database backup in case of Abnormal Shutdown

      • In case of Abnormal Shutdown, the software asks you to take a back-up.
      • Click on 'Yes'; it will open the Backup window to take the backup as stated above.
      • On completion of successful back-up,close the Backup window and the POS will open normally.

  1. From the Administration module:

    Pre-requisites

    1. Ensure that POS is being run in Administrator Mode by right clicking on the POS icon and selecting the Run as Administrator option. If the logged in user doesn't have Administrator rights in Windows, then the system will not allow him to stop / start data sync scheduler service.
    2. You need to have access to the Administration module for your role for taking back-up from within the software.

    3. If you have configured your secondary backup location to a USB drive, make sure it is attached to your system at the time of executing the backup.
    1. Go to Administration from Navigation bar and click on Database under System in the left pane. In the Backup Information section.

    2. Click on Take a FULL Backup Now button. This opens the Backup window.

    3. Click on the Stop Scheduler Service button.

    4. Click on Start Backup Now button.

Note: If the purpose of the backup is to migrate the installation to new server or re-installation of POS server, then DON'T Start Schedule Service

    5. Once the backup process is complete and successful, start the scheduler service by clicking on the Start Schedule Service button.

    6. Click on Close to close the window.

Note: If you select the check box "Auto-start data sync scheduler service upon successful POS DB backup and automatically close the Backup window", then the scheduler service will start automatically and window will be closed.
