SYMPTOMS

An error occurred while trying to restore POS backup using DBRestore.exe utility, the following message appears on screen.

GINESYS Data Restore

An error occurred while reading the backup information.

Error: The media family on device
'c:\ProgramData\GINESYS\Restore\POSFullBackup_POS.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL server cannot process this media family.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally'.

CAUSE

POS Backup (.bak file set) was taken in Advanced version of SQL server application but when the same backup is trying restore in lower version of SQL Server Application, this error occurs.

  • Earlier client used higher version SQL server (Ex: SQL server 2012)

  • Later client installed lower version SQL server (Ex: SQL server 2008)

  • In such scenario you can not restore DB backup (or attach Database) created in upper version into lower version.

RESOLUTION

  • Confirm previously which version of SQL server client used.

  • Post confirmation install the same or higher version of SQL server.

We can restore DB backup (or attach Database) created in the lower version into upper version.
